DAY ONE

    UMOJA ( oo-MOH-jah )

    UNITY

To Strive For and Maintain Unity, in the Family, Community, Nation and Race.
Dr. Maulana Karenga

KWANZAA is a Cultural Holiday celebrated by African Americans, Africans, Caribbeans, South Americans and African communities in Britain and throughout Europe. The word Kwanzaa was developed from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza", which indicates "first fruits" in Kiswahili, where Dr. Maulana Karenga, the Creator of Kwanzaa simply added another 'a' to the Kiswahili spelling to differentiate it to the African American Diasporic's Spelling.

Traditionally Kwanzaa Celebrations, which premiered on December the Twenty Sixth, Nineteen Hundred Sixty Six, when Dr. Karenga lit the Umoja
( Unity ) Candle alongside of Family and Friends, is Celebrated until January First, of the New Year. These Seven Days correlate to ( in Kiswahili, The Nguzo Saba ) THE Seven Principles, which are the Backbone of Kwanzaa.
